Licensing Overview

A software license grants your customer the right to run or access a software program. Microsoft licenses software in three primary ways: Full Packaged Product (retail), Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), and Volume Licensing. Making the right licensing decision for your customers is easy if you know what their current software needs are:

Original Equipment Manufacturer

Customer:
Anyone purchasing a new computer

Description:
Licensed software is preinstalled on the new computer, the easiest and most economical way to acquire the Microsoft Windows operating system for a new computer. The OEM license is supplied with Microsoft Software License Terms information, but no retail packaging

Full Packaged Product

Customer:
Home users or small businesses requiring software for fewer than five computers

Description:
Individual packages of boxed licensed software usually purchased at retail outlet

Microsoft Academic Volume Licensing

Educational establishments are entitled to simple yet flexible volume-based pricing through the Academic Volume Licensing programme. Microsoft offer education customers the option of both subscription and transactional licensing.

Volume Licensing Agreement

Customer:
Any business that require licences for five or more desktop PCs

Description:
Groups of licences for five or more desktop PCs sold via a customised program that is tailored to the size and purchasing preference of your customer’s business.

There are several volume licensing programs to select from depending on your customer’s requirements:

Open License

The Open License program is designed for companies that have as few as five desktop PCs. The program provides a simple, flexible, and cost-effective way to acquire the latest Microsoft technology

Open Value License

The Open Value License program is designed for small to mid-sized organisations for 5 – 250 PCs under a single agreement that tracks licenses for all desktops
