BRUSSELS
The city of choice for Eurocrats, Brussels is sumptuous, historic and luxuriously cosy. With
artistry richer than chocolate, architecture as graceful as its cuisine and diversity frothier than
the beer, Brussels is an heirloom of northern culture at its best. What makes Brussels special?
Seafood in great restaurants, the smell of hot waffles on a cold winter's day, cafes and pubs
that never close, the cosmopolitan but neighbourly feel, forests practically on the doorstep,
pheasant and truffles in autumn, comic strips, designer shops... the list is endless!
BARCELONA
Barcelona has transformed itself into one of the most dynamic and stylish cities in the world.
Summer is serious party time, with week-long fiesta fun. But year-round the city sizzles - it's
always on the biting edge of architecture, food, fashion, style, music and good times. The
buildings, many the work of the eccentric genius Gaudí, will blow you away. The art, with
significant collections by Picasso and Miró, will make you clammy all over. The people, with
their exuberance, their duende, their persistent egalitarianism, will fascinate you.
AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam is one of the world's best hangouts, a canny blend of old and new: radical squatter
art installations hang off 17th-century eaves; BMWs give way to bicycles; and triple-strength
monk-made beer is drunk in gleaming, minimalist cafes. The city seems to thrive on its mix
and, despite hordes of tourists, still manages to feel quintessentially Dutch. The old crooked
houses, the cobbled streets, the tree-lined canals and the generous parks all contribute to the
atmosphere.
ROME
It's hard to say what you'll find most breathtaking about the eternal city - the arrogant
opulence of the Vatican, the timelessness of the Forum, the top speed of a Fiat Bambino, the
millions of cats in the Colosseum, trying to cross a major intersection, or the bill for your latte.
Make like the locals and souse your senses in the glut of pleasures the city has to offer, from
the grandiose thrill of feeling centuries of turbulent history under your feet to the small but
potent intoxication of eating chestnut gelati on a hot day.
NICE
Nice is just a delight, with its flower market, gorgeous coastline, sipping drinks mere feet from
the Mediterranean, great shopping and delightful pastries. Nice itself is an attraction: the rich
blue-green sea, diverse shopping, splendid dining and lovely art-deco façades. But there are
several spots that a tourist simply must see, such as the Cours Saleya Flower Market, the
Matisse Museum, ancient Roman ruins, the Russion Cathedral and more. Find out about the top
attractions in Nice, France.
PRAGUE
Maticka Praha - 'little mother Prague' - was largely undamaged by WWII, and the cityscape is
stunning. Its compact medieval centre remains an evocative maze of cobbled lanes, ancient
courtyards, dark passages and churches beyond number, all watched over by an 1100-year-old
castle. Kidnapped by communism for 40 years, Prague has become one of Europe's most
popular tourist destinations. Its traditional pubs and eateries have been augmented by a wave
of gourmet restaurants, cocktail bars and trendy cafes - though you can still feast on pork and
dumplings washed down with a beer.
